Inside Out: An Exhibition by Carys Reilly and Brian Daines
18th- 25th February 2023
Opening Night: 17th February 18:00 - 20:00

Surface is pleased to announce Inside Out, an exhibition by Carys Reilly and Brian Daines.

Inside Out addresses women's health issues and how they are portrayed in society where they are often minimised, trivialised and ignored. Both artists have exhibited work around women’s chronic illness before in London, Glasgow, Sheffield and Brighton. Reilly has a history of endometriosis, and Daines has a background in offering psychotherapy to women with chronic illnesses which have both contributed to their practice.

The attitudes which are highlighted in their work appear particularly with gynaecological conditions, especially those that present themselves with problematic menstruation. They believe that negative attitudes still persist in the medical profession and society generally. Whilst they do not want to overemphasise these aspects of many women’s lives, they believe that culture has gone in the opposite direction of hiding illness, and what people face in their lives as a result. They want to challenge the lack of awareness, and inadequate diagnosis and treatment, that leave many women marginalised in the world of work, and in life generally.

‘Menstrual Moaning’ Workshop
18th and 25th February, 2.30pm to 4pm.
Women’s health problems encounter the medical profession. Reilly and Daines will both be discussing the meaning behind their art work in the exhibition and what led them towards this theme. They will then perform a short drama illustrating the barriers women can face when attempting to access treatment for pain and chronic conditions. This will then lead to an opportunity to discuss these issues and the artist's experience/practice.

Inside Out opens in the Main Gallery. As always, there will be a donations bar with ales from local brewery, Pheasantry.

Free Entry: Everyone Welcome
