Paying Attention, Creating from the Everyday with Toby Curtis
Saturday 5th October, 11am to 2pm
Do you remember when people used to look where they were going? What if, rather than using our phones as a distraction, we used them to pay attention. In this workshop, Toby will explore different ways to tune in to the world around us and within us. Phones in hand, we’ll explore the area that surrounds the gallery, paying attention to the everyday, the mundane, the ignored, taking photographs of textures, surfaces, of out of focus compositions, and creating photographs like abstract paintings. On returning to the gallery, these photographs will become the subject matter for drawings, which will then be used by Toby as the basis for an exclusive body of work to be exhibited in a pop-up show at Surface. The resulting work, then, will be a co-authored collaboration between artist and workshop participants.
This workshop is suitable for participants of all ages. All you need to bring is a phone with a camera that displays images on screen. All other materials provided.
