Abstract: Contemporary Art Open
26th March - 9th April
Opening Night: Friday 25th March, 6-9pm
Surface is delighted to announce the spring open, Abstract.
Chosen from over 350 submissions, more than 140 artworks by the 70 artists have been selected for Abstract. This vibrant selection of artwork, displayed across both exhibition spaces, achieves its effects through colour, form, mark-making. Together with this exploration of visual aesthetics, many pieces show that abstract art can carry a spiritual aspect, explore the inner self, and stand for principles of order, purity, and simplicity.
Abstract includes paintings, such as Poseidon by Mary Tempest, which explore the full force of colour, while Ken Ager’s work uses the language and materials of textiles, and extends beyond traditional two-dimensional pieces to create three-dimensional constructions. The exhibition also features a moving piece by Simon Le Boggit, String Theory, which celebrates algorithmically generated abstract visuals and music, mesmerizingly entangled in ways which make chaos and repetition appear alive and intentional.
Abstract art formed a central area of art in the 20th century, and now exists in many forms. This exhibition explores how artists are engaging with abstract art today, how it can be two or three dimensional, large or small, use moving image, and unusual materials and surfaces. One artist will be award a solo exhibition in our main exhibition space.
Abstract will occupy both the Main Gallery and Project Space. As always, there will be a donations bar with ales from local brewery, Pheasantry.
