Surface is delighted to welcome Bernie Rutter, winner of the Surface award for the Derby Print Open, and a collaborative exhibition, Home.

From lockdown to the smallest room in the house, and a small opening on the road to freedom, we are finally able to welcome Bernie Rutter and her collaborators to Le Loovre. Awarded the exhibition for last year’s Derby Print Open, Rutter saw the possibility of expanding the horizon of creative possibilities. “To me”, she explains, 

lockdown highlighted the need to connect, to collaborate and to share ideas.  This petit show includes a series of small works, created during and just after lockdown, that focus on the artist’s response to home, comfort, and security. The work includes traditional and digital prints, paintings, and small sculptural forms. 

The collaborative elements created by Rutter were a set of small “flatpack” house forms. The other artists were asked to respond to them.

The Artists
Bernie Rutter is a printmaker and visual artist born in the UK and now living in Derbyshire. She has translated the house into small sculptural families, they are inspired by ideas around security/insecurity, comfort/discomfort, connection/non connection and the links we made and maintained during lockdown.

Yuka Jourdain is a jeweller originally from Japan, now living in Derbyshire. She has used the houses as templates and created metal nests inspired by her current focus on environmental insecurity and loss of habitat.

Vitor Azevedo is a visual artist originally from Portugal, currently based in Derby. He has altered the house forms and enhanced them using his signature layers of rich colour to transform them.
