If Only They Knew: A Solo Exhibition by Charlie Buttrum
1st—8th April
Opening Night: Friday 31st March, 6-9pm

Surface is pleased to announce If Only They Knew, an exhibition by Charlie Buttrum.

If Only They Knew explores the effects of domestic abuse through a range of visual media: painting, mixed media, sculpture, photography. Art has always been a part of Buttrum’s life, but became increasingly important in her journey, helping her to escape loneliness and to express her own experience of domestic abuse. Buttrum wants to raise awareness and bring attention to the effects that abuse can have both mentally and physically. Survivors of domestic abuse are often left with physical and neurological conditions such as fibromyalgia, ADHD, and depression, and then left without support as they attempt to pick up the pieces and put them back together. There is the common misconception that domestic abuse occurs solely between intimate partners. As the work on display illustrates, domestic abuse is any form of abuse within your domestic circle.

Artist Talks
Saturday Ist April, 2pm and 4pm
Buttrum will be sharing a story that began fifteen years ago. She will address some of her work in the exhibition, and will be talking about what inspired her to create it in the way she did. There will be opportunity for questions throughout.

If They Only Knew opens in the Project Space in conjunction with the annual studio artist show, Full Circle, in the Main Gallery. As always, there will be a donations bar with ales from local brewery, Pheasentry.
